About Us
Rustic Loom is a woman and mom owned sustainable textile design studio based in Brooklyn, NY. Our purpose is to make modern textiles for the global good. We team with non-profit organizations and small workshops in Ghana and India to pay fair wages and aim to foster a sustainable livelihood for the artisans who make our collections. We start with painted sketches on paper, edit our designs on the computer, then partner with artisans in India and Ghana who hand make our wares.
Note from Rebecca Miller, Founder
After a semester studying design at University of Art and Design in Finland and graduating from Rhode Island School of Design in Textiles, I travelled to Ghana in 1998 to learn about traditional cloth. In Ghana, I was impressed by batik making and wax prints used for everyday fashion. Since my initial visit to Ghana, I have run several textile and art businesses consisting of my own hand painted and batik printed line of silk scarves and shawls, fabric designs sold to textile and product manufacturers, as well as my own painting practice. An exploratory trip to India in 2011 inspired me to partner with artisans in India and Ghana to hand dye, print, weave, and sew designs. In 2012 I founded Rustic Loom, then in 2013, and 2015, I gave birth to two beautiful, energetic boys. As an artist, designer, and mother I am deeply committed to paying fair, sustainable wages to each partner in the heart felt process of making our wares. Rustic Loom's alliance with individual artisans in India and Ghana, small businesses in the USA who make our labels, pillows and local tailoring, community cooperatives and a women's empowerment organization in India who sew our products makes ethical sourcing happen!
